Recognising the signs of problem gambling
Gambling becomes a problem when it starts affecting your finances, relationships, work, or mental health. Look for these warning signs in yourself or a loved one:
Spending more than you can afford to lose, or chasing losses
Borrowing money or selling possessions to fund gambling
Lying about how much time or money you spend gambling
Feeling anxious, irritable, or restless when not gambling
Gambling to escape stress, anxiety, or depression
Neglecting work, study, or family because of gambling
Multiple unsuccessful attempts to cut back or stop
Continuing despite serious negative consequences
If you recognise three or more of these signs, please consider reaching out for support. Problem gambling is a treatable condition β not a character flaw.

Self-exclusion at Malaysian online casinos
Most reputable casinos we recommend offer self-exclusion tools. Here's how to use them:
Cooling-off periods
Temporarily lock your account for a set duration. Usually 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, or 6 months. Available at: BK8, 12Play, WE88, Me88, Maxim88, W88, Aw8.
Permanent self-exclusion
A permanent account closure that cannot be reversed for at least 6 months (often longer). Required by license at PAGCOR-licensed operators (Aw8, U88, Me88).
How to activate self-exclusion
- Log into your casino account
- Go to My Account β Responsible Gaming (or "Account Settings β Limits")
- Choose: deposit limit, loss limit, time limit, cooling-off, or self-exclusion
- Confirm via email β most operators require email confirmation to prevent accidental activation
If a casino refuses to honour a self-exclusion request, that's a serious license violation. File a Trust Center case immediately and we'll escalate it.
Setting limits before you play
The healthiest way to play online casinos is to set limits before you ever deposit. We recommend:
- Deposit limit β daily, weekly, or monthly cap. Set this lower than you think; you can always raise it later (with a 24-hour delay at responsible operators).
- Loss limit β caps your net loss. When hit, the casino blocks further play.
- Session time limit β auto-logs you out after a set duration. Useful if you tend to lose track of time.
- Reality checks β pop-up alerts every 30/60/90 minutes showing time and money spent.
Help for family and friends
Watching someone you love struggle with problem gambling is painful. You can help, but you cannot force recovery. What works:
- Listen without judgment. Most problem gamblers know they have an issue but feel deep shame about it.
- Don't enable. Don't lend money to cover losses. Don't lie to others on their behalf.
- Set boundaries on shared finances. Joint accounts, credit cards, savings β protect them.
- Encourage professional help. Befrienders KL, MIASA, and GA Malaysia all welcome family members.
- Take care of yourself. Family of problem gamblers experience high rates of depression and anxiety. Counselling for you matters too.
Our promise to you
If you've self-excluded from any casino we recommend, we will never show you targeted ads from that operator. We will never email or message you about new bonuses. We will respect your decision. Permanently. β The AskProGambler team
Underage gambling
Online gambling in Malaysia is restricted to adults aged 18 and older. It is illegal for anyone under 18 to gamble online, and any operator we recommend will close accounts found to be underage and refund all deposits.
If you're a parent concerned about your child gambling online:
- Use parental control software (Net Nanny, Qustodio, BetBlocker)
- Monitor financial transactions β sudden small deposits to "Help2Pay" or "Eeziepay" are red flags
- Talk openly about gambling risks the same way you'd discuss alcohol
- Report any operator targeting minors to our Trust Center β we forward to the regulator
